For Bass Players Only conducted its 700th bass player interview with none other than NS Artist Tony Levin. Congrats to Jon Liebman for many years of wonderful interviews with some of the world’s best bass players! https://forbassplayersonly.com/tony-levin/

In the interview, Levin chats with FBPO’s Jon Liebman in some detail about Levin’s reunion effort with Prog supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE). Levin, John Petrucci (guitar), Jordan Rudess (keys) and Mike Portnoy (drums), have returned with their third studio album, just released last Friday, LTE3. Safely bubbled during the sessions, the album had been recorded secretly in August, 2020 at the Dream Theater Studio (DTHQ). Levin talks gear including the variety of basses he selected for making the album. Check out what he says about the song “Chris & Kevin’s Amazing Odyssey” and why he chose the NS Upright for that particular song, despite being “an upright and it’s got big strings… and it’s not meant for playing super fast.”

An avid photographer and blogger, Levin had time this past year to organize a selection of his tens of thousands of photos, negatives and transparencies into a ‘coffee table book’, called Images From A Life On the Road, sharing his visual chronicles from a most unique perspective.

It’s not a surprise that it will be a busy year for Levin, with upcoming tour plans including Stick Men, King Crimson and Levin Brothers. Visit Tony Levin’s Website and Road Diary for tour dates and to buy the book!

Levin plays the CRM Upright and CR Cello.

These indie-roots rockers performed original songs from their upcoming release, featuring NS Artists Michael Micuccui, on CR6 RADIUS bass, and Joeseph Cevallos, NXTa and WAV violin.

A concept born of the fun and informative CONNECT2021 Virtual Gathering January event hosted by NS Founder Ned Steinberger, with NS Artist Relations Manager Corey Redonnett, this was the first of its kind CONNECTLIVE event. This hour long chat and performance highlights included additional NS Artist Educators Brittany Frompovich, and Scott Laird, along with friends Matt Laird, Matt Bell of Electric Violin Shop, Mark Gollihur, founder of Gollihur Music, and Barry Moorehouse, founder of The Bass Centre, House Music, and Brian May Guitars. It was a great hour of music and discussion.

We welcome you to watch this virtual gathering and learn a bit about how the artists use their NS instruments to get the variety of sounds in performance.

The instruments featured in this event were the CR6 RADIUS Bass Guitar and the NXTa Electric Violin, and WAV Electric Violin.

“Having first played an NS bass well over 25 years ago, while window-shopping and dreaming, I will never forget the amazing feel—the action of the strings—and, man, I fell in love. Now, I am rather ecstatic to own two of them, a CR5M Upright Bass and EU6 Upright Bass.”

Classical crossover trio Simply Three plays music that is anything but simple.

They have performed covers of artists from Adele to Michael Jackson to Queen, winning the hearts of thousands of concert-goers and millions of YouTube followers. Blending top-notch musicianship with high production value and a dose of good humor, their recent music video—a cover of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”—sums them up pretty well:

(Please note: NS Design does not endorse playing your bass on top of a moving car. Even if you can.)

NS Design’s electric bowed instruments are integral to Simply Three’s music, both live and in studio. They perform with a matching set of CR Series instruments (CR Violin, CR Cello, CRM Upright Bass) with custom slate gray finish, in addition to their acoustic instruments.

The group takes full advantage of their NS instruments’ broad tonal palette and strong, clean signal. They also rely on NS Design’s ergonomics and patented support systems for their choreographed performances.

After all, not just any cello sounds good inside an AMC Pacer!

Here’s what Glen McDaniel, Zack Clark, and Nick Villalobos say about their NS instruments:

Glen McDaniel (CR Violin)

“NS makes a fantastic violin. It stands out against all the major brands in its ability to produce a warmth and resonance that sound natural despite being an electric instrument. To me, it has the most interesting and visual appeal as well.”

Zack Clark (CR Cello)

“The NS CR Cello is the best sounding electric cello on the market today. I absolutely love its unique look as well as the versatility I have with its dual pick-up system. It’s the only electric cello I use both on the road and in the studio.”

“I continue to discover the versatility of this instrument and it continues to impress me every day.”

Acclaimed by everyone from the Boston Philharmonic to the Huffington Post, Simply Three has over 1.1 million followers on YouTube.
Gary “Wayne” Brewer Jr.’s deep roots span six generations of the Brewer family musicians performing bluegrass and country music worldwide. As a youngster, Wayne was encouraged to carry on the old-time music tradition that his great grandfather played in the mountains of Tennessee. At just 18 months old, Wayne sang lead vocals and played guitar accompanying his father Gary Brewer, and grandfather, Finely J. Brewer in the recording of their CD “Memories of Home”.

When Wayne was 14, he joined his father’s band, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers. Among his varied accomplishments as a young musician, Wayne has been awarded with two Guinness Book of World Records for “The Youngest Recording Artist” and “The Youngest Artist to perform on The Grand Ole Opry Stage”.
At 26, Wayne now proudly shares producing and playing credits with his father on Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers’ Country-Roots CD release “Vintage Country Revival” holding the #1 spot on the Country Global Radio Airplay Charts.

Brewer plays both the NS WAV Upright Bass and NS WAV Violin with the Ramblers and we love what he has to say about the WAV Upright: “Because of its compact size, sound comparability, and reliability while on the road as a full-time touring musician, I prefer my NS Upright Bass.”

In recent years, Wayne has taught himself to play fiddle. In 2017, he released his debut album called “The Kentucky Fiddler”. Writing on Bluegrass Today, John Lawless praised the recording: “This collection of tunes… hearkens to the days of yore when musicians gathered around one microphone and played, to the best of their ability and interpretation, the songs without overdubs.”

Wayne, Gary and all of the Kentucky Ramblers invite you to join them for the Season Five tradition of their Friday Night Brewgrass Music Series in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, held weekly in ‘the Barn’ through early April. Opening each show, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers are followed by a performance of a touring artist stopping off in Shepherdsville, KY. This season ends with a “Shin-Dig in the Park Music Festival” in late April, 2019. Be sure to catch a show! For tickets and more information, visit their website: www.brewgrass.com

Those who have been following his career know that Bakithi Kumalo joined Paul Simon’s band in 1985 and has performed with him ever since. His playing on Simon’s album Graceland became one of the iconic bass performances of all time. In February, Simon announced Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour, the final phase of his fifty-year performance career. Kumalo will accompany him on this tour, as he has for the last thirty years. He plays an array of NS instruments, including the CR5 RADIUS bass guitar and the NXT4 electric upright bass.

Last October we had the pleasure of capturing highlights of time spent between Bakithi and Ned Steinberger at Ned’s studio and workshop in Maine. In the course of their conversation, Ned shared his thoughts on instrument design and the relationship between designer and musician. Bakithi played and shared his own thoughts on Ned’s instruments, including some of his experimental creations.

This is a must-watch video for any fan of Bakithi or Ned, and fascinating for anyone who thinks deeply about music.

Grammy-nominated bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma is celebrated internationally for his creatively free, avant-garde and funky approach to the electric bass. One of the most distinctive bassists of his generation, he is credited for redefining the potential of the instrument. He began playing a Steinberger bass in the 1980s and has maintained a relationship with Ned Steinberger ever since. Jamaaladeen now plays the NS Design WAV RADIUS Bass Guitar and WAV Electric Upright.

Tacuma’s Albums, Grammy-nominated Jukebox and Dreamscape, with original Steinberger bass.

At the age of 19, Tacuma caught the attention of Ornette Coleman and rose to prominence as the first bassist in Coleman’s electric band, Prime Time. He toured and recorded with the group throughout the 1970s and 80s. In 1989, Tacuma’s Jukebox was nominated for a Grammy for best jazz album of the year. In 2011 he was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts.

Tacuma has collaborated with a diverse roster of musicians, including Carlos Santana, Jeff Beck, Marc Ribot, Pharoah Sanders, Grover Washington Jr., David Murray, and Odean Pope, among many others. He has worked with orchestras led by Anthony Davis at Carnegie Hall, and he has appeared with Hip-Hop group The Roots and artists DJ King Britt and DJ Logic. He made an appearance as band director for the David Letterman Show and has performed on Saturday Night Live.

Since 2015, Tacuma has been producing the annual Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival in his hometown of Philadelphia. He is a recipient of the 2018 Benny Golson Award from the City of Philadelphia.
