  • THE NXT ELECTRIC CELLO

The NXT Cello, available with 4 or 5 strings, fretless or fretted, opens up new vistas for the serious cellist. Crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of the renowned CR Series, NXT cellos exemplify flawless workmanship at an exceptional value. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Cello.

The tone quality and dynamic range of the NXT cello owes much to the self-powered NS Polar™ Pickup System. Employing special piezo crystals, mounted beneath the bridge, the pickup captures the full sound spectrum created by the strings and body of the instrument. Arco versus pizzicato playing creates more vibration energy in one direction than the other, and a convenient switch on the side of the NXT actually allows the player to select sensitivity for either mode. The result is either more percussive response, or smoother and sustained response, adding a new dimension to what the player can create musically.

As a pure electric instrument, the NS Cello has certain built-in advantages over an acoustic. One is the virtual absence of wolf tones, an unfortunate fact of life for the acoustic cellist. Another is freedom from feedback in amplified performance settings, which means that the cellist can move about the stage at will, and better yet, can take solos at any volume. Since 100% of the sound comes via the pickup, using looping and other electronic effects in live performance is much easier and far more effective than with an amplified acoustic, where much of the unprocessed sound "leaks" out to the audience.

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated fingerboard, delivers a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. Asymmetrical fingerboard relief provides extraordinary ease of playability from the lowest to the highest positions. To suit individual player preferences, the fingerboard relief can be adjusted via the truss rod in the neck, and the string height is readily adjustable at the bridge.

NS Electric Strings and most traditional acoustic strings fit all NS Cellos, allowing the player to select from a wide range, each with a unique sound a feel. In combination with the easy adjustment of basic set-up parameters, the NXT cello is adaptable to a nearly limitless range of music styles.

A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The optional Cello End Pin Stand provides the seated cellist familiar points of thigh contact and position. The optional Boomerang Strap System and The Frame Strap System allow the cellist to stand up with full mobility for a new experience of freedom and expression. An escutcheon pin on the neck, corresponding to the location of the heel on an acoustic cello, is standard; a more conventional wooden neck heel is also available for installation.

The NXT cello brings unprecedented affordability to the player interested in world-class design, craftsmanship and performance. With a visual appearance a striking as its sound, the roadworthy NXT is an exciting and reliable partner for the most demanding performance career.

Featured Technology The Polar™ Pickup System

As a player, you may not think about the direction your strings are vibrating, or even be aware that string vibrations on a musical instrument are polarized in relation to the fingerboard and the motion of the plectrum and bow. Yet direction is one of the most significant factors influencing the tone and response of a stringed instrument. In fact, instruments from the violin family are different from the lute or guitar in large part due to the effects of string polarization.

  • THE CR ELECTRIC CELLO

The NS Cello, designed by Ned Steinberger, is available in the affordable CR Series. This remarkable instrument, available with 4, 5 or 6 strings, is able to produce the delicate and precise tones of its acoustic parent as well as to create exciting new sounds through the tone shaping geometry of its innovative Polar™ piezo pickup system.

Interchangeable support systems provide new performance options. A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The inventive Boomerang Strap System and Frame Strap System allows full mobility, while the conventional Cello End Pin Stand provides the traditional points of cello contact and position.

The use of standard cello strings and scale length establishes a familiar starting point for the cellist's journey to the electric world. From there anything goes. The energetic response of the NS Cello can be tamed to deliver a traditional cello tone, or set loose to explore new territory.

    Features

SOLID MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The CR Cello is crafted of European maple, with a flame maple face. This solid-body design develops a rich multi-dimensional tone free from the constraints inherent in an acoustic instrument. The traditional cello scale length and neck shape have a familiar feel, while the small body allows full access to the upper register. Brass escutcheon pin on the rear of the neck serves as a reference point corresponding to the heel of an acoustic cello. Solid construction provides structural stability to resist changes in temperature and humidity.

FINGERBOARD: The fingerboard is expertly graduated with an asymmetric profile to insure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for position.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar bridge-mounted piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like an electric bass guitar), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

ACTIVE ELECTRONICS: The dual mode preamp allows the player to choose between two very distinct tone qualities. The first mode delivers the full frequency response of modern low impedance electronics, for a rich, full-blown "electric" sound. The second is balanced to produce the frequency response of the traditional cello, for a more "acoustic" sound. A three-way toggle switch allows the player to select the desired pickup and electronics options. Additional controls include volume and individual bass EQ & treble EQ controls.

  • THE NXT OMNI BASS

The NXT Series Omni Bass, with the familiar 34 inch bass guitar scale, is designed for the bass guitarist interested in adding the character and expressiveness of an acoustic upright bass, or the NS electric upright, to their performance palette. Available in 4 and 5 string configurations, with either Satin Black or Sunburst finish, these well-priced instruments are produced in the Czech Republic with the same meticulous care as NS Design's renowned CR Series Omni Bass. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Omni Bass.

Our Polar™ Bridge Pickup System combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to arco and pizzicato technique.  The Omni Bass responds to the bow with a natural and expressive voice, combining powerful bass resonance with brilliant harmonics. The strings are easily driven, making it possible for bassists with little bowing experience to add this beautiful dimension to their music.

The 34" scale length of the Omni Bass is the same as standard electric bass, and is available in 4 and 5 string versions. Tuned in fourths (EADGC or BEADG), the fingering positions and spacing are identical to the bass guitar, and therefore immediately familiar to any bass player.

The fingerboard also features the TransRadius™ profile. For a left-hand feel which is familiar to the experienced bass guitarist, the radius at the nut is 9-1/4 inches. At the end of the fingerboard near the bridge, however, the radius is just 2 inches, large enough to maintain good string-to-string articulation with the bow, yet still comfortable for pizzicato (plucked/picked) style. The asymmetrical fingerboard relief facilitates an even 'growl' from the higher strings and a clear, powerful lower register.

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated fingerboard, deliver a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. The adjustable bridge and truss rod allow for low, fast action, or for higher string settings that encourage the traditional acoustic player to 'dig in' with gusto. NS Electric Omni Bass Strings and standard bass guitar strings fit the Omni Bass, adding unlimited set up options for musicians who want to explore and create their own unique sound.

The Boomerang™ Strap System is standard with the NXT Omni Bass. Two articulated arms and a pivoting hub allow full mobility on stage or in studio. The comfortable Boomerang strap fits over the shoulder just like a guitar, but the adjustable arms allow the instrument to be placed in virtually any position in relation to the hands and body. The Boomerang Strap System allows full mobility for either bowing or plucking.

  • THE CR OMNI BASS

This Omni Bass was designed for the bass guitarist looking for upright bass performance characteristics, as well as for upright bassist looking for a more portable performance partner. With its familiar 34 inch bass guitar scale, the four and five string fretless and fretted models all use identical fingering to that of the conventional bass guitar, yet deliver dynamic new plucked and bowed sounds for the serious bass guitarist seeking an expanded expressive range. This radical electric bass combines the tonal purity of the acoustic upright with the awesome power of the full-blown electric, resulting in the most versatile bass on the market today.

The Omni Bass responds to the bow with a natural and expressive voice, combining powerful bass resonance with brilliant harmonics. The strings are easily driven on both fretted and fretless models, making it possible for bassists with little bowing experience to add this beautiful dimension to their music.

From punchy, percussive attack to smooth, singing sustain, the CR Omni Bass's exclusive Polar™ piezo pickup is the only system that allows the bassist to control the attack and decay of the plucked string. EMG™ magnetic pickups add classic electric sounds. The on-board pre-amp, EQ, and mixer allow the player full control of this wide tonal palette right from the instrument.

The Boomerang™ Strap System is standard with the CR Omni Bass.

    Features

MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CR Series Omni Bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face. The solid-body design enhances sustain and clarity, and is resistant to the effects of temperature change and humidity.

FINGERBOARD: The 34" scale length of the Omni Bass is the same as standard electric bass, and is available in 4 and 5 string versions, fretted or fretless. Tuned in fourths (EADGC or BEADG), the fingering positions and spacing are identical to the bass guitar, and therefore immediately familiar to any bass player.

TransRadius™ PROFILE: For a left-hand feel which is familiar to the experienced bass guitarist, the fingerboard radius at the nut is ten inches.

TRUSS ROD: An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style.

CASCADING POSITION MARKERS: A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for position. Fretted models have conventional bass guitar dot pattern.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar directional piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like an electric bass guitar), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

EMG MAGNETIC PICKUPS: The low-impedance EMG pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets. Each coil is buffered separately for a full sound quality with very low noise.

ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for magnetic and piezo pickups, the mode of the Polar pickup direction, and individual treble EQ & bass EQ controls. The 18-volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics.

"I would like to thank Ned Steinberger for his wonderful design and incredibly versatile instrument. The bowed sound has wonderful control, and the pizzicato sound is unique in that the cellist has a switch that controls different choices of sound. In my recent recording engagements, the cello has played a wonderful part in creating sounds that are unique and unusual."

    —David Darling (ECM recording artist)

"The NS Cello provides a means through which a player can make music without having to accommodate technical limitations that have been imposed by instrument design since the Renaissance. There are some who will be frightened by the freedom the instrument offers; others will immediately recognize that to master this instrument is to grow immensely as a cellist."

    —Myles Jordan (Da Ponte Quartet)

  • NXT Bass Instructions

    STAND

Open the legs wide for stability, and secure in place with thumb screw clamp. Mount the instrument to the stand using the large (5/16”) thumb screw at the top of the stand. Using the adjustment knobs, it is possible to adjust the height, angle, and tilt of the instrument.

    CONTROLS

    • Knob 1 – Volume
    • Knob 2 - Tone clockwise for full treble, counter-clockwise to cut treble.
    • Switch
      • Up for Arco Mode (for optimal bowed and percussive plucked sound).
      • Down for Pizzicato Mode (for optimal plucked, sustained sound).

The Polar™ pickup allows the player to control attack and decay parameters. Pizzicato Mode is for a smooth attack and long decay, Arco (percussive) Mode is for massive attack and relatively fast decay. Note that the full bow response can only be achieved in the Arco Mode.

    PASSIVE ELECTRONICS

This is a passive system, so it does not require batteries, and therefore has unlimited headroom for dynamic, distortion-free response. The large piezo crystal sensors are powerful, and provide plenty of level for most amps. However, the output impedance is high, and may not match well with amps that are designed for magnetic coil (electric guitar) pickups. The symptom of poor impedance matching is reduced bass response. As a result,on some amps the bass control will need to be turned up for best results. Amps with 1 meg ohm or greater input impedance are recommended.

    TRUSS ROD

Use 6mm inch hex wrench. Access is just below the nut. Clockwise rotation tightens the truss rod to decrease relief. To play well, the surface of the fingerboard should not be perfectly straight, but rather it should have a slight forward curve from end to end.

    STRING HEIGHT

Adjust bridge height with Phillips head screws under the bridge, accessible through the back plate.

    STRING REPLACEMENT

The NXT Bass is designed to fit standard NS Electric Double Bass Strings. Replacement NS strings should be available from your dealer. Conventional acoustic double bass strings can also be used. However, acoustic strings are much longer, extending far beyond the bridge. To avoid adding this extra length to the body of the instrument, extra string slots are provided on the back so that the long strings can wrap around the end of the body.

ATTACHING STANDARD ACOUSTIC DOUBLE BASS STRINGS

To install standard acoustic strings, thread the strings through the holes in the body from the back, then wrap the strings around the end of the instrument and hook the ball ends into the key holes in the back plate. The strings are then threaded into the tuners in the normal manner.
