• THE NXT ELECTRIC UPRIGHT BASS

The NXT Series Double Bass, whose electronics are based around the Polar™ Pickup System, shares the classic body design, ergonomics and performance support options of the CR and EU Series. Available in 4 and 5 string configurations, these instruments are produced in the Czech Republic by the same craftsmen who build NS Design's most advanced instruments. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Double Bass.

Arco and pizzicato techniques have unbounded expressive potential, thanks to the Polar Pickup System. A convenient switch allows selection of the traditional arco mode for percussive attack and dynamic bowed response, or pizzicato mode for a smooth, sustained tone. Passive electronics deliver unlimited overhead for the ultimate sound without batteries.

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated fingerboard, deliver a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. Asymmetrical fingerboard relief facilitates an even 'growl' from the higher strings and a clear, powerful lower register. The adjustable bridge and truss rod allow for low, fast action, or for higher string settings that encourage the traditional acoustic player to 'dig in' with gusto.

NS Electric Strings and most traditional acoustic strings fit all NS Double Basses, allowing the player to select from a wide range, each with a unique sound and feel. In combination with the easy adjustment of basic set-up parameters, the NXT Series Bass is adaptable to many different styles of music.

Several interchangeable support systems are available for the NXT bass: The NXT Tripod Stand (standard); the heavy-duty CR Tripod Stand; the more conventional Bass End Pin Stand and optional Conversion Kit (used in conjunction with the CR Tripod Stand); or full mobility either the Boomerang™ Strap System or the Frame Strap System.

GIG BAG AND FLIGHT CASE: The NXT double bass includes a padded gig bag that has a pouch for tripod stand, a bow compartment and room for accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft.  An optional hard-shell flight case is available for the NXT double bass.

Featured Technology The Polar™ Pickup System

As a player, you may not think about the direction your strings are vibrating, or even be aware that string vibrations on a musical instrument are polarized in relation to the fingerboard and the motion of the plectrum and bow. Yet direction is one of the most significant factors influencing the tone and response of a stringed instrument. In fact, instruments from the violin family are different from the lute or guitar in large part due to the effects of string polarization.

    BASS END PIN STAND

Screw base into the head of the end pin stand. Using the large thumb screw. Be sure large rubber washer is between the stand and the back of the body.

Move the support arm into position as shown at right With the lower clamp, adjust the length of the pin to set the bass at the desired height. Place the tip of the pin on the floor just in front of your playing position, so that the stand and bass lean back gently toward you. (The further the tip is forward, the more the bass leans back.) Center the pin on the floor so the instrument stays balanced from side-to-side. Adjust the forward tilt and lateral angle of the bass itself to establish the ideal playing position.

Note: UNPLUG CORD WHEN NOT IN USE! (inserting plug turns on battery.)

    CONTROLS: (top to bottom)

    • Volume
    • Balance - counterclockwise for optimal pizzicato (plucked, sustained) sound, clockwise for optimal arco (bowed and percussive plucked) sound, center for both
    • Treble - boost and cut
    • Bass - boost and cut

Note: For bowing, it is best to use the bridge pickup only in arco mode.

    STRINGS

Flat and round wound NS Double Bass strings specially made for us by D’Addario, are available as listed below. The instrument comes equipped with these special strings sized to fit the shorter body of an electric instrument. Flatwound Lights standard on most models, are a solid core flatwound string, with full, sustained tone and responsive, easy to play string tension. The Roundwound Lights are very bright, with remarkable articulation of the full harmonic spectrum. Many upright players prefer the smooth Helicore acoustic style strings, with their warm tone, percussive attack, and relatively high tension.

Instructions for Attaching Standard Acoustic Double Bass Strings:

Conventional double bass strings extend far beyond the bridge. To avoid adding this extra length to the body of the NS Double Bass, the strings wrap around the end of the body and fit into slots in the back.

To install standard acoustic strings, thread the strings through the holes in the body, then wrap the strings around the back of the instrument and secure the ball ends in the slots in the back plate. See second photo down on the right.

    STRING HEIGHT

Adjust bridge height with set screws under the bridge (use 3mm hex key), accessible from the back.

    PICKUP ADJUSTMENT

Magnetic pickups adjust by loosening set screws in the anchor adjacent to the round coil caps (use 1.5mm hex key). Hold at desired height and re-tighten set screw. Output level for each mode of the piezo bridge pickup can be adjusted with small trim pots that are found on the circuit board in the body cavity.

    BATTERIES

Always unplug the bass when not in use to save the batteries. Change both 9 volt batteries at the first sign of distortion. These are located on the bottom end of the instrument, and can be removed by loosening the small screw and rotating the tab to allow the batteries to slide out.

    TRUSS ROD

The truss rod will reduce relief when tightened. Use 6mm hex wrench, with access near nut. Clockwise rotation decreases relief.

  • THE CRT ELECTRIC UPRIGHT BASS

The "Traditional" version of the NS Double Bass is set up to satisfy the needs of the experienced upright bassist. The standard 106 cm acoustic upright scale length is preserved to insure that fingering and string tension will be consistent with acoustic instruments. While the neck shape is traditional, the small body allows unrestricted access to the upper register of the fingerboard. A small brass button on the back of the neck provides a tactile reference for the traditional "D neck" position. Dot markers provide a subtle but effective intonation reference.

NS Electric Traditional Double Bass Strings by D'Addario™, specially designed for NS basses, are standard on both 4 and 5 string CRT models. These deliver a classic upright tone, warm and percussive, with a great response to the bow. The bridge is raised to lift the strings above the fingerboard for action typical of the acoustic upright. Higher string tension and action make it possible to "dig in" like on an acoustic, with reserves of rich sound that can be eased back for a traditional tone, or brought forward for exciting new sounds.

The CRT neck and body are made from select maple. The full scale fingerboard is graduated for consistent response from note to note, with adjustable relief and bridge height to suit all playing styles. Our Polar™ Bridge Pickup System combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to arco and pizzicato technique.

An End Pin Stand is standard equipment with the CRT series. The fully adjustable mono-pod design allows the player to set the instrument in a position like that of an acoustic double bass. The point where the end pin touches the floor can be easily adjusted so that the weight of the instrument is centered over the tip. This balances the instrument leaving both hands free for expressive play. The End Pin Stand Conversion Kit attaches to the optional CR Tripod Stand to hold the instrument upright for on-stand performance or when not in use.

    Features

MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CRT Series double bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face. The neck has a traditional upright shape, but with extended access to the upper register of the fingerboard. The solid-body design enhances sustain and clarity, and is resistant to the effects of temperature change and humidity.

FINGERBOARD: The fingerboard is expertly graduated with an asymmetric profile to insure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for position.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar directional piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like an electric bass guitar), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for piezo pickups, the mode of the Polar pickup direction, and individual treble EQ & bass EQ controls. The 18-volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics.

ADJUSTABLE BRIDGE: Two screws in the back of the body are used to adjust the bridge up and down. This allows the instrument to be set up to meet the requirements of many different playing styles.

SUPPORT SYSTEMS: Several interchangeable support systems are available for the bass: the CR Tripod Stand, the more conventional (standard issued) Bass End Pin Stand with optional Conversion Kit, or full mobility the Boomerang™ Strap System or the Frame Strap System.

GIG BAG AND FLIGHT CASE: The CRT double bass includes a padded gig bag that has a pouch for the End Pin Stand and room for accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft. An optional hard-shell flight case is available for the CRT double bass.

  • THE CR-M AND CR ELECTRIC UPRIGHT BASS

The CR Series electric upright bass, with its exceptional versatility and tone quality, is an indispensable tool for a wide range of touring professionals and recording artists. The lean, solid-body CR Series bass takes its place in a long history of fine instruments crafted in the Czech Republic.

Available in 4 and 5 string models, the CR Series neck and body are made from select maple. The full scale fingerboard is graduated for consistent response from note to note, with adjustable relief and bridge height to suit all playing styles. Our Polar™ Bridge Pickup System combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to arco and pizzicato technique. Optional EMG™ magnetic pickups expand the range to include classic electric bass sounds.

According to BassPlayer™ magazine, the Czech made CR Series "boasts impeccable craftsmanship from a country with a reputation for quality upright bass building. It's clean aesthetics, excellent playability, and great sound put it ahead of the pack."

    Features

MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CR Series double bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face.

POLAR BRIDGE PICKUP SYSTEM: The Polar pickups can sense either lateral or vertical string vibration - or both! Set in the lateral mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity in the direction of the bow. In the vertical mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained.

EMG MAGNETIC PICKUPS: A feature of the CR4M and CR5M basses, the low-impedance EMG pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets. Each coil is buffered separately for a full sound quality with very low noise.

ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for magnetic and piezo pickups, the mode of the Polar pickup direction, and individual treble EQ & bass EQ controls. The 18-volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics.

ADJUSTABLE BRIDGE: Two screws in the back of the body are used to adjust the bridge up and down. This allows the instrument to be set up to meet the requirements of many different playing styles.

Several interchangeable support systems are available for the bass: the CR Tripod Stand, the more conventional Bass End Pin Stand with optional Conversion Kit, or full mobility the Boomerang™ Strap System or the Frame Strap System.

GIG BAG AND FLIGHT CASE: The CR double bass includes a padded gig bag that has a pouch for tripod stand, a bow compartment and room for accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft.  An optional hard-shell flight case is available for the CR double bass.

  • THE EU ELECTRIC UPRIGHT BASS

Our flagship double bass, the EU Series is made in the Czech Republic to the exact specifications of the original US Series instrument. The revolutionary design is molded with concentric laminations of graphite and rock maple that run the entire length of the instrument for maximum sonic integrity. The back of the neck is curved inward to follow the arch of the fingerboard, resulting in a slim, easy to play neck with full access to the upper register.

The Polar™ Pickup System, with its ability to respond to lateral and vertical vibration separately or both at once, is uniquely suited to an instrument that is both bowed and plucked. A fabulous bowed response and drum like pizzicato attack are characteristic of the lateral mode, while the sustained pizz. response of the vertical mode creates a new dimension for the upright bass. Magnetic pickups by EMG™ add a smooth option to the sound pallet. With active EQ and full control of pickup selection, the sonic options are virtually unlimited.

Available in 5 and 6 stringed models, the EU Series Double Bass, designed by Ned Steinberger, is in a class of its own, offering the bassist unparalleled performance and tonal quality.

“It’s wonderful when an instrument can inspire you with your music and gives you a gift of sending you in a direction that works just because of the sound of it. ”

    —Tony Levin

    Features

MAPLE/GRAPHITE LAMINATE: The body and neck employ a unique laminating process combining 27 alternate thin layers of maple (for the feel and warmth of wood), and graphite fibers (for brilliance, consistent sustain, and stability) adhered in an epoxy matrix. The result: remarkable strength & tonal brilliance.

CONCENTRIC NECK, BODY, AND PEGHEAD: The back of the neck is curved inward to follow the arch of the fingerboard, creating a broad recess for the thumb that gives the neck a slim, fast feel for its entire length and ensures structural integrity from neck to body.

PICKUPS: The unique Polar pickup, a bridge-mounted piezo pickup system, senses both lateral and/or vertical string vibration. In the lateral or arco mode, the pickup has unparalleled sensitivity with the direction of the bow. In the vertical or pizzicato mode, plucked notes are remarkably even and sustained. The low-impedance EMG magnetic pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets, giving the player a more diverse sonic palette.

ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, blend controls for the magnetic and polar pickups, and individual bass EQ and treble EQ controls.

Several interchangeable support systems are available for the bass: the CR Tripod Stand, the more conventional Bass End Pin Stand with optional Conversion Kit, or for full mobility the Boomerang™ Strap System or the Frame Strap System.

    1. CR Tripod Stand - Supplied as standard equipment, the CR Tripod Stand provides stable support, with full height and tilt adjustment. The stand folds down to fit in the gig bag.
    2. Bass End Pin Stand - The optional Bass End Pin Stand offers the upright bassist a more traditional position, similar to that of an acoustic instrument. To hold the instrument upright for on-stand performance or when not in use, the Bass End Pin Stand can be attached to the CR Tripod Stand using the optional End Pin Stand Conversion Kit.
    3. Boomerang Strap System - The Boomerang Strap System has two articulated arms and a pivoting hub allow full mobility on stage or in studio. The comfortable Boomerang strap fits over the shoulder and the adjustable arms allow the instrument to be placed in virtually any position in relation to the hands and body. The Boomerang Strap System allows full mobility for either bowing or plucking.
    4. Frame Strap System - This optional lightweight frame structure allows the player full mobility to perform in standing or upright positions, holding the bass comfortably for both arco and pizzicato styles.  This is supported by a single guitar style strap extending over the left shoulder.  The Frame Strap System opens new and exciting performance possibilities releasing the player from traditional constraints of acoustic counterparts.

GIG BAG AND FLIGHT CASE: The EU Bass includes a padded gig bag that has a pouch for tripod stand, a bow compartment and room for accessories. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft. An optional hard-shell flight case is available.

The end result, sound-wise, is a bass that has it all: sweet arco, contemporary-jazz pizz, thumping Latin, rocking punch, and a mammoth low B that was more than any amp in my shop could handle - and all of this from an instrument that's guaranteed for life and fits in an airplane's overhead bin.
