THE NXTa ELECTRIC VIOLIN

The NXTa Electric Violin Series, with the new active output electronics, includes 4 and 5 string violins and fretted violins, all embodying physical elegance, tremendous ease of play, and amazing tone. Crafted to exacting standards in the Czech Republic, this series sets a high standard for performance and versatility in any setting. Click here for the original NXT Series Violin.

Good ergonomics, including light weight, are critical performance factors for any electric violin. With their familiar left hand landmarks, including the removable reference bout, NXTa series instruments are remarkably easy to play. Starting at just 585 grams, they set the pace as some of the lightest electrics on the market.

FEATURES

Using set screws, the rock-maple bridge can be readily adjusted to the desired action height—high and powerful, low and fast, or anywhere in between.

A contoured ebony chin rest is standard. The optional Adjustable Chin Rest is also available for players wanting a more extensive range of position adjustments for further customized fit and comfort.

The standard Custom Shoulder Rest is highly adjustable, and whose base can be readily formed to fit the chest and shoulder perfectly. The NXTa also accepts NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest, which secures it effortlessly in optimal playing position.

The patented tuning system built into the bottom of the body allows quick, easy and precise adjustment, exceptional pitch stability, and easy string changes.

At the heart of the NXTa is the Polar™ Pickup System, whose piezo components convert string vibration directly to signal output. This provides a balanced, tonally rich output, offering a wide range of expressive opportunities. Arco and Pizzicato have significantly different vibration characteristics, and the Polar Pickup faithfully captures both.

Dual Mode Output - The new dual mode signal output electronics of the NXTa takes the convenience, versatility and performance capability of the NXT to another level.

Active Mode - Using the supplied charger, plug the NXTa into any AC outlet for 60 seconds to power the capacitor-powered active circuit for up to 16 hours of performance time. The instrument can then be plugged straight into any low or high impedance device, no direct box necessary. Since there is no signal loss over the full frequency spectrum of the instrument, the fundamentals of every note remain clear and strong, even with extra-long cables.

Passive Mode - The NXTa can be played in this mode when using a direct box or an amplifier with high impedance input. (This mode provides performance capabilities identical to the original NXT.)

Eco-Friendly Operation - NXTa instruments are battery-free, eliminating the hassle and cost of batteries while helping protect our environment.

Featured Technology The Polar™ Pickup System

As a player, you may not think about the direction your strings are vibrating, or even be aware that string vibrations on a musical instrument are polarized in relation to the fingerboard and the motion of the plectrum and bow. Yet direction is one of the most significant factors influencing the tone and response of a stringed instrument. In fact, instruments from the violin family are different from the lute or guitar in large part due to the effects of string polarization.

THE NXTa ELECTRIC VIOLA

Designed to meet the demands of studio, stage, and other challenging performance environments, the NXTa Active Viola frees the violist from the limitations of an amplified acoustic viola. Based around a comfortable 16" viola string scale, key features of this instrument include the Polar™ Pickup System with the new dual mode signal output, patented precision tuning system, sleek, ergonomic design, and comparatively light weight. Available with either a flame maple Sunburst or Satin Black finish, the NXTa features a maple body, the comfortable Custom Shoulder Rest, and an adjustable-height bridge. Most important, the NXTa Viola offers artists exceptional amplified and recorded performance quality, and extraordinary freedom of expression. Click here for the original NXT Series Viola.

FEATURES

The Polar Pickup System is driven directly by the vibration of the strings, enabling it to produce a full spectrum of sound with power and clarity. (By contrast, an acoustic viola's amplified performance is heavily dependent upon the resonant capabilities of the body of the instrument.) The NXTa set up with F-C-G-D, Octave, or even G-D-A-E strings, delivers the entire range with full richness of tone. A convenient switch beside the volume and tone controls allows selection between heightened Arco and Pizzicato pickup sensitivity, expanding the tonal palette even further, virtually free of wolf tones.

Dual Mode Output - The new dual mode signal output electronics of the NXTa take the convenience, versatility and performance capability of the NXT to another level.

Active Mode - Using the supplied charger, plug the NXT into any AC outlet for 60 seconds to power the capacitor-powered active circuit for up to 16 hours of performance time.

The Custom Shoulder Rest features a foam-padded malleable aluminum base, which the player can bend and mold to the surface to the chest and shoulder. A wide range of height and angle adjustments can be made while the instrument is in playing position.

The ergonomically contoured ebony chin rest is designed to work in tandem with the Custom Shoulder Rest for control, comfort and security. The optional Adjustable Chin Rest is also available for players wanting a more extensive range of position adjustments for more customized fit and comfort. The NXTa also accepts NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest, which "floats" the instrument in the desired playing position.

THE NXTa ELECTRIC CELLO

The NXTa Active Series Cello, available with 4 or 5 strings, fretless or fretted, opens up new vistas for the serious cellist. Crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of the renowned CR Series, NXT series cellos exemplify flawless workmanship at an exceptional value. Click here for the original NXT Series Cello.

As a pure electric instrument, the NS cello has certain built-in advantages over an acoustic. One is the virtual absence of wolf tones, an unfortunate fact of life for the acoustic cellist. Another is freedom from feedback in amplified performance settings, which means that the cellist can move about the stage at will, and better yet, can take solos at any volume. Since 100% of the sound comes via the pickup, using looping and other electronic effects in live performance is much easier and far more effective than with an amplified acoustic, where much of the unprocessed sound "leaks" out to the audience.

FEATURES

The tone quality and dynamic range of the NXTa cello owes much to the self-powered NS Polar™ Pickup System. Employing special piezo crystals, mounted beneath the bridge, the pickup captures the full sound spectrum created by the strings and body of the instrument. Arco versus Pizzicato playing creates more vibration energy in one direction than the other, and a convenient switch on the side of the NXTa actually allows the player to select sensitivity for either mode. The result is either more percussive response, or smoother and sustained response, adding a new dimension to what the player can create musically.

Dual Mode Output - The new dual mode signal output electronics of the NXTa take the convenience, versatility and performance capability of the NXT to another level.

Active Mode - Using the supplied charger, the NXTa connects into any AC outlet for 60 seconds, powering the capacitor-powered active circuit for up to 16 hours of performance time.

The solid maple body and neck along with the graduated fingerboard contribute to the delivery of a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. Asymmetrical fingerboard relief provides extraordinary ease of playability from the lowest to the highest positions. To suit individual player preferences, the fingerboard relief can be adjusted via the truss rod in the neck, and the string height is readily adjustable at the bridge.

NS Electric Strings and most traditional acoustic strings fit all NS cellos, allowing the player to select from a wide range, each with a unique sound a feel. In combination with the easy adjustment of basic set-up parameters, the NXT Series Cello is adaptable to a nearly limitless range of music styles.

A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The optional Cello End Pin Stand provides the seated cellist familiar points of thigh contact and position. The Boomerang™ Strap System or the Frame Strap System allows the cellist to stand up with full mobility for a new experience of freedom and expression. An escutcheon pin on the neck, corresponding to the location of the heel on an acoustic cello, is standard; a more conventional wooden neck heel is also available for installation.

THE NXTa OMNI BASS

The NXTa Active Series Omni Bass, with the familiar 34 inch bass guitar scale, is designed for the bass guitarist interested in adding the character and expressiveness of an acoustic upright bass, or the NS electric upright, to their performance palette. Available in four and five string configurations, with either Satin Black or Sunburst finish, these well-priced instruments are produced in the Czech Republic with the same meticulous care as NS Design's renowned CR Series Omni Bass. Click here for the original NXT Series Omni Bass.

The Polar™ Bridge Pickup System combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to Arco and Pizzicato technique.  The Omni Bass responds to the bow with a natural and expressive voice, combining powerful bass resonance with brilliant harmonics. The strings are easily driven, making it possible for bassists with little bowing experience to add this beautiful dimension to their music.

Eco-Friendly Operation - NXTa instruments are battery-free, eliminating the hassle and cost of batteries while helping protect our environment.

omni_scale

The 34" scale length of the Omni Bass is the same as standard electric bass, and is available in 4 and 5 string versions. Tuned in fourths (EADGC or BEADG), the fingering positions and spacing are identical to the bass guitar, and therefore immediately familiar to any bass player. The Omni Bass can also be tuned in fifths.

The fingerboard also features the TransRadius™ profile. For a left-hand feel which is familiar to the experienced bass guitarist, the radius at the nut is 9-1/4 inches. At the end of the fingerboard near the bridge, however, the radius is just 2 inches, large enough to maintain good string-to-string articulation with the bow, yet still comfortable for pizzicato (plucked/picked) style. The asymmetrical fingerboard relief facilitates an even 'growl' from the higher strings and a clear, powerful lower register.

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated fingerboard, deliver a rich, full tone that rings true for every note. The adjustable bridge and truss rod allow for low, fast action, or for higher string settings that encourage the traditional acoustic player to 'dig in' with gusto. NS Electric Omni Bass Strings and standard bass guitar strings fit the Omni Bass, adding unlimited set up options for musicians who want to explore and create their own unique sound.

The Boomerang™ Strap System is standard with the NXTa Omni Bass. Two articulated arms and a pivoting hub allow full mobility on stage or in studio. The comfortable Boomerang strap fits over the shoulder just like a guitar, but the adjustable arms allow the instrument to be placed in virtually any position in relation to the hands and body. The Boomerang Strap System allows full mobility for either bowing or plucking.

THE WAV RADIUS BASS GUITAR

The WAV RADIUS Bass is completely about the experience, every time you pick it up. It's in the feel of the instrument before you plug it in, and it's embodied in the tone, performance and possibilities when the house lights go down. Among the advantages of a headless bass are weight and balance. The RADIUS body contours to your torso, your hands fall naturally into place, and there is no neck dive. It feels extraordinarily secure and comfortable.

Available in 4 and 5 string models, the WAV RADIUS has an expansive, practical tone palette, stage-ready in any venue. A tight, rock-solid low end underpins the exceptional clarity and harmonic integrity carried throughout its range. It's one of the differences you feel the moment you plug it in. The intonation is spot-on, through to the 24th fret. When you need it, quick, precision tuning is at your right-hand fingertips, readily adjustable even while you're playing. Finally, an intuitive, straightforward control setup lets you find your voice (no matter what you play), or shift gears with freedom to explore the broad sonic territory provided by the NS WAV RADIUS Bass.

Features

NS DIRADIAL™ BODY: The concave back profile provides a sense of comfort and stability against the torso. The front of the instrument is more tightly radiused, which, in combination with the general wedge shape of the body, creates a more comfortable orientation to the right hand. The configuration of the body cutaway provides easy access to the highest frets. The tuning system is integrated into the body.

NS RADIUS NECK: The headless, one-piece bolt-on maple neck has 24 frets, a 34" scale for the WAV4 and 35" scale for the WAV5, and a familiar 15" radius. A volute provides thumb reference at the nut. String slots in the aluminum headplate eliminate the need for a headstock with heavy tuning machines. Conveniently accessed from the top of the neck, the heavy-duty aluminum double-action reinforcing truss rod, with its patented differential thread drive, gives both rigidity and precise relief control.

BRIDGE & SADDLE: The aluminum one-piece bridge and saddle assembly provide broad height and angle adjustment, allowing the player to precisely tailor the action and adjust the intonation.

NS POLAR™/EMG™ HIGH IMPEDANCE DUAL PICKUP SYSTEM: Active electronics, including the 9-volt onboard preamp and EQ, integrate a magnetic custom EMG RADIUS pickup and the NS bridge-mounted Polar pickup. The EMG pickup has a radiused top and magnetic structure to optimize the tone and harmonics from every string. The Polar pickup is a unique piezo design, combining a tight and powerful low end with exceptional clarity. The WAV offers master volume and balance controls, along with separate tone controls for each pickup.

GIG BAG: The WAV RADIUS bass guitar includes a padded gig bag with a handle, adjustable backpack straps and a large front zipper pocket with room for cables and gear. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft.

A patented system (US Patent 6,528,710) based on a design originally created for the NS violin, the RADIUS has a self-clamping, precision tuning machine, built into the body. This fast, simple system accepts any standard single-ball end, full-scale bass guitar string. No tools are needed: simply rotate the knurled knob to change a string or tune the instrument.

THE CR RADIUS BASS GUITAR

Meticulously crafted in the Czech Republic, the RADIUS Bass Guitar embodies a breadth of experience, insight, and design brilliance which only Ned Steinberger can bring to the creation of a new classic. His approach to the RADIUS, as with every new instrument, was to re-explore each facet of a bass guitar, leading to innovations such as the Fusion neck, the Diradial™ body design, the NS tuning system, and the NS/EMG™ pickup system. However, what makes this instrument most remarkable is its seamless integration of feature, form and function.

The sensuous lines of the RADIUS are balanced and refreshing, which is exactly how it feels to hold and to play it. Most of all, the RADIUS is, by design, the most sonically dynamic, versatile and exciting bass available today. According to the editors of the UK's Guitar & Bass Magazine™, which awarded it 2014 Best Guitar Over £1,000, the RADIUS is "a wonderful instrument that manages to look cooler than a headless bass has any right to," and "a bass that demands to be played."

Fretted or fretless, 4 string (CR4) or 5 string (CR5), the CR Radius Bass Guitar is available in Amber Satin, Natural Satin, or Charcoal Satin finishes.

Features

NS FUSION NECK: The RADIUS features a bolt-on one-piece maple neck with an embedded continuous carbon fiber core and adjustable truss rod. This combination has the natural feel of wood, but the core provides enhanced sustain and definition to each note. The fingerboard, which has a 15" radius, is 34" scale for the CR4 and 35" scale for the CR5. Heavy conventional tuning machines are replaced by an aluminum headplate with ball-end string mounting slots. The tuning system is integrated into the body.

NS DIRADIAL BODY: The RADIUS's maple body, with flamed maple top, has a concave back radius, which provides enhanced contact and stability against the torso. The front of the instrument is more tightly radiused, which, in combination with the general wedge shape of the body, shifts it into more comfortable orientation with the right hand. The distinctive horn provides a natural grip, and the configuration of the body cutaway provides easy access to the highest frets.

The instrument as a whole is perfectly balanced, no downward dip of the neck, giving the left hand unprecedented freedom. Combined, the shape, balance and light weight of the RADIUS make this instrument exceptionally comfortable to play.

NS/EMG INTEGRAL PICKUP SYSTEM: NS Design and EMG have collaborated to create this integrated piezo and magnetic pickup system. It features an 18-volt onboard preamp, which provides extraordinary dynamic headroom. The active electronics are combined with the NS bridge-mounted Polar™ Pickup System, the marriage of which puts an exceptionally broad, musically rich spectrum of tone at the player's fingertips.

CONTROLS: The controls on the RADIUS bass give the player full ability to shape and mix the magnetic and piezo output: Master Volume, active Treble cut/boost, active Bass cut/boost, rotary magnetic/piezo pickup blend, 3-position magnetic pickup selector switch, and 3-position piezo EQ switch.

BRIDGE & SADDLE: The aluminum one-piece bridge and saddle assembly provide full height and angle adjustment, allowing the player to precisely tailor the action and tweak the intonation with the adjustment of hex head set screws (hex key included).

GIG BAG: The RADIUS bass guitar includes a deluxe padded gig bag with a handle, adjustable backpack straps and a large front zipper pocket with room for cables and gear. The loaded gig bag will fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial aircraft.

THE WAV ELECTRIC VIOLIN

The NS WAV Electric Violin is the perfect electric violin for any player interested in exploring the world of amplified or electronic performance. Full, natural tone, outstanding comfort, and sophisticated design are combined in an instrument which is simply a pleasure to play.

At the heart of every NS electric violin is the Polar ™ Pickup System. Sensor and bridge geometry are integrated to translate every nuance to the amplifier and speaker system. The big, bold, and brilliant tone looks to the future, yet the sonic ingredients of the acoustic violin are present and can be tamed to become traditional in character. The Polar pickup has the unique ability to analyze the direction of string vibration to enhance the bowed response and to facilitate bow technique. The unusually powerful piezo crystals do not require on-board power, for maintenance-free performance without the hassle of batteries.

The reserve power of a well set up electric violin makes the instrument easier to play than a conventional acoustic. The NS WAV Electric Violin's rock maple bridge is easily adjustable for the playing style and action height you prefer; high and powerful like a traditional violin, low and fast like an electric guitar, or anywhere in between. The ebony fingerboard is graduated for each string to optimize the tone and playability of every note. The neck is smooth and fast, with traditional thumb reference points for the scroll and heel. The removable bout provides accurate position reference for players accustomed to using the traditional body shape for reference.

Accurate, stable tuners are the key to in-tune performance. The patented self-clamping tuning mechanism automatically grips the string ever more tightly as tension is applied, and the micrometer tuning is smooth and precise. This rock solid tuning is light years ahead of the friction tuners found on traditional instruments.

Light weight and good balance are the essential comfort factors for any electric violin. The fully carved interior of the NS WAV Electric Violin keeps the weight to the minimum, and the body mounted tuners bring the center of gravity back over the shoulder where it belongs. The WAV includes the Custom Shoulder Rest, which allows you to shape and adjust the padded base to the contours of your shoulder and chest, for a secure and comfortable fit. Also included with the instrument is the ergonomically contoured ebony chin rest, designed to work in tandem with the Custom Shoulder Rest for control, comfort and security. The optional Adjustable Chin Rest is also available for players wanting a more extensive range of position adjustments for more customized fit and comfort. The WAV also accepts NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest, which "floats" the instrument in the desired playing position.

The NS WAV Electric Violin comes complete with fabric covered hardshell case with handle and shoulder strap. It’s padded on the inside, with room for your bow, and compartments for the shoulder rest, output cable, and extra gear. An optional flight case is available.

THE NXT ELECTRIC VIOLIN

The NXT electric violin opens up a new horizon for the serious musician seeking to play a world-class electric violin on a limited budget. Available as 4 or 5 string, standard or fretted, these instruments, crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of NS Design's renowned CR series, exemplify flawless workmanship at an incredible value. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Violin.

Light weight and perfect balance are critical performance factors, and the NXT electric violin tops the charts as one of the lightest in its class. Weighing in at 585 grams (610 grams for the NXT5), the NXT pioneers special carving techniques to reduce the weight of the maple body, while preserving extraordinary rigidity and striking good looks. Ultralight tail-mounted tuners allow precise adjustment, easy string changes, and keep the balance point of the instrument close to the shoulder for maximum comfort.

Additional weight is saved by advanced piezo technology that eliminates the need for heavy on-board batteries and circuitry. The self-powered Polar™ electromechanical transducer, technically referred to as a passive pickup, is anything but passive, with higher output than most active systems. The result is unsurpassed dynamic range, clarity, and sheer power. The dual mode Polar pickup responds to both lateral string vibration for bowing, and vertical vibration for pizzicato playing. (A body-mounted two-way switch lets the player change modes easily.) The resulting sound retains the essential timbres of a fine acoustic violin, but is easily modified via on-board controls or post-processing, to suit almost any sonic palette.

As adaptable as it is powerful, the NXT adjusts easily to any violinist's style. A contoured ebony chin rest is standard. So is the Custom Shoulder Rest which is fully adjustable, and whose base can be readily formed to fit the chest and shoulder perfectly. The optional Adjustable Chin Rest is also available for players wanting a more extensive range of position adjustments for further customized fit and comfort. The NXT electric violin also accepts NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest, which secures it effortlessly in optimal playing position. Using set screws, the rock-maple bridge can be readily adjusted to the desired action height—high and powerful, low and fast, or anywhere in between.

NS Electric Strings and all other traditional violin strings fit NS violins, allowing the player to select from many different string options, each with a unique sound and feel.

THE CR ELECTRIC VIOLIN

NS Design's CR Electric Violin, available in both 4 and 5 string models, standard and fretted, is the preeminent electric violin on the market today. Designed by Ned Steinberger, the violin has a remarkable tonal range due to its innovative Polar™ Pickup System, which is able to selectively capture the string vibration favored for both bow and pizzicato technique with stunning brilliance and sensitivity. The violinist who prefers the elegant tone of a fine acoustic will not be disappointed, and for those who wish to explore new sonic territory, the sky is the limit.

The solid-body NS Electric Violin incorporates the familiar performance features of an acoustic instrument, including a removable bout segment to provide the left-hand reference position of a traditional instrument. Traditional string spacing and scale length facilitate the transition from the acoustic instrument to the world of the electric violin. Direct amplification and recording capabilities allow the violinist to experience the vast range of electronic and amplified performance opportunities, yet continue to savor the essence and timeless magic of the violin.

Features

SOLID MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The CR Violin is crafted of solid maple, with an elegant flame maple face. This lightweight solid-body design transfers the full spectrum of sound to the pickup without feedback, and is very stable even with changes in temperature and humidity. The ergonomic shoulder and chin rest provide comfortable, stable support, and a removable treble side bout is included for left hand position reference. The solid ebony fingerboard is hand graduated for consistent string articulation.

PERFORMANCE SUPPORT SYSTEMS: The CR Violin comes equipped with the Custom Shoulder Rest which can be formed by the player to fit the body perfectly. The ergonomically contoured ebony chin rest is designed to work in tandem with the Custom Shoulder Rest for control, comfort and security. The Adjustable Chin Rest is optional, offering a range of positions for individual fit, style and comfort, providing entirely new levels of ergonomic support. As an option, the violin can also attach to NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest which secures it effortlessly in optimal playing position.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar directional piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like a mandolin), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

ACTIVE ELECTRONICS: The dual mode preamp allows the player to choose between two very distinct tone qualities. The first mode delivers the full frequency response of modern low impedance electronics, for a rich, full-blown "electric violin" sound.

Over the centuries of its evolution, one of the singular struggles for the violin maker and player alike has been to achieve more volume without sacrificing tone or playability. That need and desire has never been greater than in the present era, where the violinist frequently shares the stage with instruments designed for the plugged in world of amplifiers and high-powered sound reinforcement. The NS is, in every sense, designed for that very stage, but is equally well bred for life in the studio. Please explore and compare our amazing electric violin line-up and see which one fits your performance needs best.  Along the way, learn about the remarkable Polar™ Pickup System, the patented NS self-clamping tuning system, the adjustable height bridge, the malleable Custom Shoulder Rest, and other important features which distinguish the NS.

After a long and tiresome search for the best sound on an electric violin, the moment I tried a NS violin, I knew my quest has come to an end. The flexibility of having a natural violin sound and with a simple switch of a button, to sound like an incredible electric guitar is worth gold. I have been using the violin a lot for the recording of the soundtrack for the documentary "Jealous of the Birds", which I am presently co-writing with academy award winner Hans Zimmer. And having just played it in a clubbing I even found out its an absolute chick-magnet - what else could you ask for?

—Aleksey Igudesman

I came across Ned Steinberger and his amazing instruments at the 2001 NAMM show in LA, and had to have one. I played this instrument a good deal with the SFU pipe band, including the live CD recording and concert at the Sydney Opera House. It has a built in preamp which creates an exemplary acoustic tone, as well as two other presets - electric and pizzicato, which are also unique to his instruments.

—Anna Schaad

I love playing the NS because of the warmth of its sound. It is as close to an acoustic instrument as I could wish to get. Not only this, but I can adjust the sound as I need. Also, it has incredible gain. Gone are the days when I can't be heard! Just an excellent, very necessary, piece of equipment for me.

THE NXT ELECTRIC VIOLA

Designed to meet the demands of studio, stage, and other challenging performance environments, the NXT4 frees the violist from the limitations of an amplified acoustic viola. Based around a comfortable 16" viola string scale, key features of this instrument include the self-powered Polar™ Pickup System, patented precision tuning system, sleek, ergonomic design, and comparatively light weight. Available with either a flame maple Sunburst or Satin Black finish, the NXT features a maple body, the comfortable Custom Shoulder Rest, and an adjustable-height bridge. Most important, the NXT4 Viola offers artists exceptional amplified and recorded performance quality, and extraordinary freedom of expression. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Viola.

The NXT's Polar pickup system is driven directly by the vibration of the strings, enabling it to produce a full spectrum of sound with power and clarity. (By contrast, an acoustic viola's amplified performance is heavily dependent upon the resonant capabilities of the body of the instrument.) The NXT set up with F-C-G-D, Octave, or even G-D-A-E strings, delivers the entire range with full richness of tone. A convenient switch beside the volume and tone controls allows selection between heightened arco and pizzicato pickup sensitivity, expanding the tonal palette even further, virtually free of wolf tones.

The NXT also accepts NS Design's revolutionary Balanced Shoulder Rest, which "floats" the instrument in the desired playing position.

As adaptable as it is powerful, the NXT adjusts easily to any violist's personal style and preferences. With a visual profile as striking as its sound, the affordable, road-ready NXT viola brings represents world-class design and craftsmanship. For the player looking for more when it comes to creative expression and exploration, the NXT is an exciting professional partner.

THE NS ELECTRIC VIOLA

The NS Electric Viola brings together extraordinary tone, exceptional playability, and truly elegant design.  Our family of instruments includes the sophisticated CR Viola with active electronics, and the straight-ahead pro level NXTa Viola featuring the new battery-free active output electronics.

Over the centuries, one of the key challenges for the viola builder and player alike has been to achieve more volume, especially in the lower registers, without sacrificing tone or playability. That need has never been greater than in the present era.  The NS Electric Viola excels, especially where the violist shares the stage with instruments built for the world of amplifiers and high-powered sound reinforcement. You will be amazed at the full-bodied performance throughout every range, and enjoy complete freedom from wolf-tones and feedback. We proudly invite you to explore and compare our amazing line-up, and consider which one might best fit your performance needs. Along the way, learn about the remarkable Polar™ Pickup System, the patented NS self-clamping tuning system, the adjustable height bridge, the malleable Custom Shoulder Rest, and other important features which distinguish the NS.

THE NXT ELECTRIC CELLO

The NXT Cello, available with 4 or 5 strings, fretless or fretted, opens up new vistas for the serious cellist. Crafted in the Czech Republic by the makers of the renowned CR Series, NXT cellos exemplify flawless workmanship at an exceptional value. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Cello.

The tone quality and dynamic range of the NXT cello owes much to the self-powered NS Polar™ Pickup System. Employing special piezo crystals, mounted beneath the bridge, the pickup captures the full sound spectrum created by the strings and body of the instrument. Arco versus pizzicato playing creates more vibration energy in one direction than the other, and a convenient switch on the side of the NXT actually allows the player to select sensitivity for either mode. The result is either more percussive response, or smoother and sustained response, adding a new dimension to what the player can create musically.

The solid maple body and neck, together with the graduated fingerboard, delivers a rich, full tone that rings true for every note.

In combination with the easy adjustment of basic set-up parameters, the NXT cello is adaptable to a nearly limitless range of music styles.

A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The optional Cello End Pin Stand provides the seated cellist familiar points of thigh contact and position. The optional Boomerang Strap System and The Frame Strap System allow the cellist to stand up with full mobility for a new experience of freedom and expression. An escutcheon pin on the neck, corresponding to the location of the heel on an acoustic cello, is standard; a more conventional wooden neck heel is also available for installation.

The NXT cello brings unprecedented affordability to the player interested in world-class design, craftsmanship and performance. With a visual appearance a striking as its sound, the roadworthy NXT is an exciting and reliable partner for the most demanding performance career.

THE CR ELECTRIC CELLO

The NS Cello, designed by Ned Steinberger, is available in the affordable CR Series. This remarkable instrument, available with 4, 5 or 6 strings, is able to produce the delicate and precise tones of its acoustic parent as well as to create exciting new sounds through the tone shaping geometry of its innovative Polar™ piezo pickup system.

Interchangeable support systems provide new performance options. A fully adjustable tripod stand can be used seated or standing. The inventive Boomerang Strap System and Frame Strap System allows full mobility, while the conventional Cello End Pin Stand provides the traditional points of cello contact and position.

The use of standard cello strings and scale length establishes a familiar starting point for the cellist's journey to the electric world. From there anything goes. The energetic response of the NS Cello can be tamed to deliver a traditional cello tone, or set loose to explore new territory.

Features

SOLID MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The CR Cello is crafted of European maple, with a flame maple face. This solid-body design develops a rich multi-dimensional tone free from the constraints inherent in an acoustic instrument. The traditional cello scale length and neck shape have a familiar feel, while the small body allows full access to the upper register. Brass escutcheon pin on the rear of the neck serves as a reference point corresponding to the heel of an acoustic cello. Solid construction provides structural stability to resist changes in temperature and humidity.

FINGERBOARD: The fingerboard is expertly graduated with an asymmetric profile to insure that each note is even and buzz free. An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style. A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for position.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar bridge-mounted piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like an electric bass guitar), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

ACTIVE ELECTRONICS: The dual mode preamp allows the player to choose between two very distinct tone qualities. The first mode delivers the full frequency response of modern low impedance electronics, for a rich, full-blown "electric" sound. The second is balanced to produce the frequency response of the traditional cello, for a more "acoustic" sound.

THE NXT OMNI BASS

The NXT Series Omni Bass, with the familiar 34 inch bass guitar scale, is designed for the bass guitarist interested in adding the character and expressiveness of an acoustic upright bass, or the NS electric upright, to their performance palette. Available in 4 and 5 string configurations, with either Satin Black or Sunburst finish, these well-priced instruments are produced in the Czech Republic with the same meticulous care as NS Design's renowned CR Series Omni Bass. Click here for the new NXTa Active Series Omni Bass.

Our Polar™ Bridge Pickup System combines great sound with directional sensitivity, for a rich and expressive response to arco and pizzicato technique.  The Omni Bass responds to the bow with a natural and expressive voice, combining powerful bass resonance with brilliant harmonics. The strings are easily driven, making it possible for bassists with little bowing experience to add this beautiful dimension to their music.

The Boomerang™ Strap System is standard with the NXT Omni Bass.

THE CR OMNI BASS

This Omni Bass was designed for the bass guitarist looking for upright bass performance characteristics, as well as for upright bassist looking for a more portable performance partner. With its familiar 34 inch bass guitar scale, the four and five string fretless and fretted models all use identical fingering to that of the conventional bass guitar, yet deliver dynamic new plucked and bowed sounds for the serious bass guitarist who wants to expand his expressive range. Tuned to E or down to low B, this radical electric bass combines the tonal purity of the acoustic upright with the awesome power of the full-blown electric, resulting in the most versatile bass on the market today.

The Omni Bass responds to the bow with a natural and expressive voice, combining powerful bass resonance with brilliant harmonics. The strings are easily driven on both fretted and fretless models, making it possible for bassists with little bowing experience to add this beautiful dimension to their music.

From punchy, percussive attack to smooth, singing sustain, the CR Omni Bass's exclusive Polar™ piezo pickup is the only system that allows the bassist to control the attack and decay of the plucked string. EMG™ magnetic pickups add classic electric sounds. The on-board pre-amp, EQ, and mixer allow the player full control of this wide tonal palette right from the instrument.

The Boomerang™ Strap System is standard with the CR Omni Bass.

Features

MAPLE BODY AND NECK: The body and neck of the CR Series Omni Bass are crafted of solid European hard maple, with a flame maple face. The neck has a traditional upright shape, but with extended access to the upper register of the fingerboard. The solid-body design enhances sustain and clarity, and is resistant to the effects of temperature change and humidity.

FINGERBOARD: The 34" scale length of the Omni Bass is the same as standard electric bass, and is available in 4 and 5 string versions, fretted or fretless. Tuned in fourths (EADGC or BEADG), the fingering positions and spacing are identical to the bass guitar, and therefore immediately familiar to any bass player. The Omni Bass can also be tuned in fifths.

TransRadius™ PROFILE: For a left-hand feel which is familiar to the experienced bass guitarist, the fingerboard radius at the nut is ten inches.

TRUSS ROD: An adjustable truss rod allows for precise relief adjustment for different strings and playing style.

CASCADING POSITION MARKERS: A cascading dot pattern across the neck provides an accurate reference for position. Fretted models have conventional bass guitar dot pattern.

BRIDGE PICKUP: The Polar directional piezo pickup system responds selectively to either vertical vibration (for the sustained plucked sound, like an electric bass guitar), or lateral vibration (for dynamic bowing, and a percussive plucked sound).

EMG MAGNETIC PICKUPS: The low-impedance EMG pickups incorporate individually adjustable coils and neodymium magnets. Each coil is buffered separately for a full sound quality with very low noise.

ACTIVE EQ AND MIXER: Controls include volume, a blend control for magnetic and piezo pickups, the mode of the Polar pickup direction, and individual treble EQ & bass EQ controls. The 18-volt power supply insures plenty of reserve overhead for full dynamics.

"I would like to thank Ned Steinberger for his wonderful design and incredibly versatile instrument. The bowed sound has wonderful control, and the pizzicato sound is unique in that the cellist has a switch that controls different choices of sound. In my recent recording engagements, the cello has played a wonderful part in creating sounds that are unique and unusual."

—David Darling (ECM recording artist)

"The NS Cello provides a means through which a player can make music without having to accommodate technical limitations that have been imposed by instrument design since the Renaissance. There are some who will be frightened by the freedom the instrument offers; others will immediately recognize that to master this instrument is to grow immensely as a cellist."

—Myles Jordan (Da Ponte Quartet)
